What is it about?

Asafoetida has been used as a herbal resinous extract in many traditional medicinal systems as a digestant and carminative. But its effects as a nootropic agent is lacking sufficient evidence in both pre-clinical and human models of cognition. This study is one of a few studies to elucidate and characterize a commercial preparation of this resin in reference to higher cognitive functions in mouse models.

Why is it important?

Reverse pharmacology is a term vaguely describing the current non-evidence-based practice of herbaceuticals for many centuries especially in traditional medicinal systems and currently generating evidence for their efficacy and safety. This has been applied to Asafoetida as a pilot study in order to prove its rather beneficial psycho-pharmacological effects in animal models of cognitive processes.

Perspectives

Few studies address the issue of Cognitive enhancing effects of Asafoetida in comparison to other anti-amnestic agents. In this study, a first of its kind proof has been generated using a novel and unique surrogate, less invasive study design in mouse. The study has evidence generated to prove its greater and quicker potency in cognitive enhancing effects in mice, at safe doses, as compared to standard drugs used currently in dementias.
