What is it about?

This paper presents a detailed performance comparison of Surface-Mounted PM machines (SMPMMs) equipped with distributed and concentrated windings. In order to reveal the merits and demerits of these kind of winding configurations three SMPMMs have been designed with identical air-gap length, stator and rotor outer and inner dimensions, number of poles and stack length. This comparative investigation is performed by using finite element analysis. Key parameters and performance characteristics, such as leakage-inductance, back EMF, average torque, torque quality, machine losses, and efficiency are compared.
