What is it about?
Sound speed (SS) correlates with the stiffness of the tissues. We observed orthopedic diseases by plotting SS values of each area. Each organ component shows different SS values to make characteristic images such as osteoporosis, woven and lamellar bones, fracture callus, intramembranous and cartilaginous bone formation, and neoplastic bone diseases.

Why is it important?
Scanning acoustic microscope needs only 10-um unstained slides and can simultaneously compare mechanical stiffness and histology. Speed-of-sound images provide informative mechanical alterations of bone, cartilage, and connective tissues to assess the status and diagnose a disorder.
