What is it about?

This work is a pilot study. We translated and adapted the first six sessions of a program called CODIP developed by Pedro-Carroll and Alpert-Gillis. CODIP is the acronym for Children of Divorce intervention program. Its first six sessions are about emotions and problem solving and do not address divorce specifically. So, we have used this adapted first six sessions and worked in a class with first year Primary school children (our experimental group of 13 children, EG) and we had a control group (CG) of 11 children who were the same age and studied in another equivalent school. Children were six years old on average. Children in the EG and the CG were measured pre and post test using SDQ (Strengths and difficulties questionnaire).

Why is it important?

Results showed that general stress in the EG significantly decreased in the post-test but there were no changes in the CG. Parents and teachers were very positive about the program.

Perspectives

I do normally talk to my students (trainee preschool teachers and Master's students) about CODIP. My students and I do like this program. With one of my Master's students we intended to apply CODIP with a group of children whose parents were divorced but out of confidentiality reasons, schools were reluctant to get involved. So, we had to change our initial goal and propose a program for the whole class, without identifying those whose parents had divorced. While we worked on this adaptation, we realised that we would address more children turning the program into a general program intended for all children in the class. As we applied the program, we became aware of the necessity of a program like this. Children were not trained about emotions and had difficulties to solve problems.
