What is it about?

The OECD Digital Economy Outlook examines emerging opportunities and challenges in the digital economy. It highlights how countries are taking advantage of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the Internet to meet their public policy objectives. The Outlook provides an overview of converging trends, policy developments and data on both the supply and demand sides of the digital economy, and illustrates how the digital transformation is affecting economies and societies.

Why is it important?

We are at a pivotal point where the digital transformation underway is reshaping economies and societies, promising to spur innovation, generate efficiencies, and improve services. Digital opportunities are flourishing, but governments must ensure they are equally harnessed by all firms, individuals, and governments themselves. The OECD Digital Economy Outlook provides comparative evidence to help policy makers better understand and anticipate digital trends and informs them of regulatory practices and policy options to help maximise the potential of the digital economy as a driver for innovation and inclusive growth.

Perspectives

Thinking about the different policy areas affected by the digital transformation, currently changing nearly every aspect of our lives, I found the stories around artificial intelligence (AI) and the future of work to be most fascinating in this report. I'm interested to see how people feel about AI and robotics; whether it's an opportunity to make gains in productivity and facilitate elements of human labour; or whether people see automation as a risk to their jobs and livelihood.
