What is it about?

The study is devoted to the history of government-owned periodicals in Siberia (the Tomsk Provincial Gazette, Tobolsk Provincial Gazette, Irkutsk Provincial Gazette and Yenisei Provincial Gazette) in the context of the history of the official provincial press and the social-political life in Russia. The main directions in the study of provincial gazettes in pre-revolutionary, Soviet and modern Russian historiography are characterized. The book shows the main changes in the legal framework of provincial sheet publishing and reviews government projects for their reform. This research describes the conditions of emergence and functioning of provincial government-owned periodicals, the main stages of their history, their editorial boards, authors and readership. The monograph highlights their role in the state administrative system, the development of provincial periodicals, self-identification of the Siberian society and academic study of the region. The author analyzes the thematic content of the non-official parts of Siberian provincial gazettes, reasons behinds their changing, information sources, and forms in which the material of newspapers was presented. This study contains facts that argue against the established opinion that provincial gazettes were insignificant and non-viable. It shows that provincial gazettes were in constant development, changing and forming regional variants. This monograph will be of interest to historian, journalists, political scientists, social anthropologists and for everyone who is interested in Russian or Siberian history, the history of periodicals, and state and society relations.
