What is it about?

This text is a revision of the early sociologists in Ecuador from the 1910s to the 1950s and the theories, concepts, and classics they use to do sociology in Ecuador. While they are generally understood as positivists and base themselves heavily on Herbert Spencer and Gabriel Tarde, there are some interesting and innovative applications to Ecuadorian society that have not been recognized adequately.

Why is it important?

Early sociology in the Global South is understudied. However, it is important to understand how this discipline developed to be able to understand 1. general tendencies of localization of academic knowledge, 2. the intellectual and academic culture, structure, and institutions during that time, and 3. over what base the critical sociology of the 1970s could develop.

Perspectives

This text is part of a bigger research project on the development of sociology as an academic discipline in Ecuador and the relationship to global sociology and other sociological traditions of thought.
