What is it about?

Using iNaturalist records from 2007 to 2024, we documented 107 orchid species in Santa María Yucuhiti, Oaxaca, including three new state records. These findings highlight the value of citizen science for exploring and conserving biodiversity.

Why is it important?

iNaturalist data enabled the compilation of an orchid checklist for Santa María Yucuhiti based on validated observations. The availability of high-resolution photographs, long-term documentation, and records from otherwise inaccessible areas enhances the reliability and completeness of such inventories.

Perspectives

iNaturalist data are valuable for documenting biodiversity; however, they may be affected by biases and limitations: the concentration of observations in easily accessible or urban areas, a preference for showy or ornamental species, a predominance of records collected during favorable field seasons, and observations based on low-quality photographs.
