What is it about?

China's news media reverts to traditional hero narratives when faced with times of crisis. These narratives serve to highlight patriotic feelings of nationalism and reassure audiences that the nation is able to call upon the strength of its military and citizens to survive.

These findings show that following a series of major events in China in the early 2000s, the media were able to draw on Maoist hero narratives to show how the nation could deal with natural, biological and political dramas.
