What is it about?
In employing technology both in and out of the classroom, EFL teachers would do well to understand what technologies their students are already familiar with and are likely to take up. This article considers these concerns of students' digital ecosystems, and provides an instrument for practitioners and researchers to use to explore this phenomenon.

Why is it important?
Technology, well employed, can be a powerful tool in a language teacher's tool-kit. We argue that employing it well means understanding students' pre-existing relationships with technology. This is especially important when generational or cultural differences between teachers and students may result in great misunderstandings about what technology is, what it can do, and how it is best used.
Perspectives
We published this a tool for practitioners and researchers, and hope it will be taken up to expand upon these ideas and our understanding of the ever shifting conditions of students' digital ecosystems.
