What is it about?

The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound effects on the US. Patients with end stage kidney disease are vulnerable to infectious complications. We showed that COVID-19 led to excess mortality in patients on dialysis and those with a kidney transplant.

Why is it important?

This study showed that rates of COVID-19 hospitalization among dialysis patients are nearly 40 times higher than in the general population, and that mortality in both dialysis and transplant patients was approximately 20% to 30% higher than usual during the second quarter of 2020. These data show that protection of this patient population, including by widespread vaccination, is critically important.

Perspectives

The United States Renal Data System offers a unique view of national outcomes in the US population of patients with end stage kidney disease. The data in this study should be used to guide political decisions.
