What is it about?
Transplantation provides a significant survival benefit to end-stage kidney disease patients including with donors with increased risk factors. To receive a donor kidney with increased risk factors, patients must consent to accept these donor offers. In this study we report the proportion and characteristics of transplant candidates in the United States that have consented to receive higher risk donor kidneys. We also demonstrate that consent is associated with a 15% increased adjusted rate of receiving a transplant following waitlist placement. This information is important to share with patients and caregivers for informed decision-making.
