What is it about?

Oxalate is a major component of kidney stones. The amount of oxalate produced by the body (endogenous synthesis) and factors that influence it are not well-known. We measured the oxalate synthesized by the body in 20 adult healthy volunteers and showed that a new and more feasible method relying on repeat fasting urine collections after equilibration on a low-oxalate diet was suitable. The results suggested that oxalate production may increase alongside higher body lean mass. The new approach described could be useful in assessing the effectiveness of new therapies on reducing endogenous oxalate production in patients with calcium oxalate kidney stones.
