What is it about?

To observe the influence that the dimensions of the built space can have on the potential of sustainable trips, research results are presented for 24 condominiums, in three districts in the city, to measure a proposed index. It was estimated the potential of the built environment of each area to stimulate the generation of sustainable trips that were compared with the global rates of travel generation. The results showed correspondence in the index estimates in relation to sustainable trips patterns carried out on foot or by public transport.

Why is it important?

As the study shows, for urban planning purposes, it is desirable to promote the development of places with high potential for sustainable trips, or at least, moderate potential, when this is not possible. In critical situations, this potential is low and, thus, effective solutions must be sought, even with a lack of public funds to invest in transport infrastructure, such as Brazilian Cities.

Perspectives

I hope that this article contributes to studies that aim to improve mobility and accessibility conditions, in the promotion of more sustainable trips, with positive effects on the dynamics of urban life.
