What is it about?

Generally a mature safety climate results into an improved safety performance. Overall the whole article is how to improve the safety performance in construction. Safety culture and safety climate are the concepts which have been adopted in most of the advanced countries to improve their industrial safety output. This article explain how the safety climate approach can be use by construction organizations in Oman to improve their workers safety. Why is it important?

Occupational safety and health related expenditure are approximately 4% of the total world's GDP. Occupational accidents which involved fatalities have further social consequences which can not be translated into money. Thus it is very important the strategies needs to be developed that how occupational accidents can be avoided. One of the current concept which has been praised internationally by many researchers is the safety climate approach. An understanding of the safety climate approach processes will help organizations to assess different safety climate factors and will be able to develop strategies how to improve the maturity level of these factors.

Perspectives

As I developed my interest in construction management research, safety was one of my main focus. The traditional methods such as causes of accidents for improving safety in construction have several limitations each construction project remain unique thus the causes of accidents will not be the same as the completed projects. More importantly, why should wait for an accident and then determine the cause. Safety climate approach provides this flexibility and allow the top management to measure the perceptions on different safety factors which contributes to safety performance. The results of this research shows that Management commitment is one of the main key safety climate factors which is considered most important in Omani construction industry.
