What is it about?

designing a bridge foundation and the geotechnical and structural modelling that was carried out to demonstrate compliance with limits imposed by the standards and also limits imposed by the rail expansion joints at either end of the bridge.

Why is it important?

for this length of bridge it is rare to have abutment pad foundations that are semi-integral. We are letting the bridge move a determined amount and the rail expansion joints prevent the track from buckling. Determining the amount of movement was the challenging part of the design.
