What is it about?
We have investigated how commercial activities in spaces designed for residential use can contribute to the publicness in urban neighbourhoods. Our research is based in the Chinese context.

Why is it important?
We found out that informally changing apartments into commercial spaces or temporary retail shops can bring more social interactions to a neighbourhood. Such activities can generate the feeling of belonging and make good community. They can also help the residents to express their opinions on their neighbourhoods. While governmental procedures try to reduce adaptive commercial activities, we suggest to make flexible policies that allow residents to change their spaces a bit.
Perspectives
We hope this article can inspire policy makers and professionals to make our neighbourhoods livelier and tolerant. We are looking forward to a new perspective towards self-building and individual modification to spaces. They could be viewed as a common thing in the future.
