What is it about?
The main degradation process of the mechanical behaviour in compressed sands is particle crushing. The consequence is an increase of the compressibility, generating deformations and damage in civil works. Examples are rockfills in high dams, sands at the tip of piles, sandy fills in discontinuities of rock masses, among others. We present experimental evidence on the effect of wetting and time on the mechanical degradation due to crushing, which will be useful for a better understanding of the phenomenon and also to be used for the development of constitutive models.
