What is it about?

We investigated the types of insects that White-headed and Hairy Woodpeckers bring back to their nestlings. We also measured the frequency of nestling feedings by male and female woodpeckers.

Why is it important?

This research broadens our understanding of the types of insects that woodpeckers are feeding their nestlings. Understanding the insect prey that woodpeckers eat during the breeding season will help forest managers better understand the habitat needs of woodpeckers and how they function in controlling insect pests.
