What is it about?

When publishing an academic work (paper, article, book etc.) authors are advised and sometimes required to make use of ‘Academic Search Engine Optimization’ (ASEO) in order to enhance the work’s visibility on search engines, therefore allowing readers to easily find and access the publication. ASEO, a process of deliberately optimizing the wording of a work’s properties such as title, abstract, and metadata, ideally results in an increased amount of readers as well as citations. This article acts as a guide for authors of scholarly works when first coming into contact with ASEO.

Why is it important?

Since the amount of academic works that can be found online nowadays is increasing exponentially, standing out and topping the search results of any topic-related query in any given academic search engine or database gets more and more crucial. Therefore ‘Academic Search Engine Optimization’ (ASEO) has become more relevant for authors who want to reach a bigger academic audience and more citations as to increase the impact on their specific scholarly community.

Perspectives

The article achieves its goal of guiding the reader through this process by explaining the steps of optimization in a manner that is easy to understand and applied to one’s own body of work without trouble. Though the ‘tips and tricks’ seem obvious at first, they offer a great insight into the workings of a typical academic search engine that are sometimes incomprehensible for the author.
