What is it about?
We doubted the short-term strength increase factors that are applicable to wood construction and conducted our own testing to determine whether there were strain-rate sensitivities for specimens that were larger in scale than those used to establish the aforementioned factors. The results showed wood is not as sensitive to bending strain-rates that are considered "impact, wind, and seismic" loading conditions, and more importantly the lowest 5th percentile in strength is unaffected by higher strain-rates.

Why is it important?
There are substantial implications from this research that effect the way that wood structures are designed. The mindset that wood has superior mechanical properties for short duration loads can have dangerously grave consequences of being too liberal in the wind, seismic, and impact design of larger scale structures.
