What is it about?

Numerous studies have recently focused on the potential effects of natural compounds, including nutraceuticals, to halt the progression of OA and reduce any associated symptoms. In spite of the presence of a tremendous amount of in vitro and in vivo data on the chondroprotective and regenerative capacity of resveratrol, no clinical trials exist to date that has determined the effectiveness of resveratrol in the treatment of knee OA

Why is it important?

This pilot study demonstrates evidence of the role of resveratrol, when used in combination with meloxicam, in improving pain in patients with mild-to-moderate knee OA compared with placebo. It also suggests that intervention with a dietary supplement, i.e. the addition of resveratrol, may have a significant impact on pain and overall quality of life in patients with knee OA.

Perspectives

I hope this article enables the researchers in the field of rheumatology to recognize the importance of natural polyphenols as effective and safe alternatives for the treatment of many chronic diseases including osteoarthritis.
