What is it about?

We reviewed the literature and described a case of endovascular treatment of a total occlusion of external iliac artery, where the use of new materials developed specifically to the treatment of such injuries was critical to the success of the case.

Why is it important?

Chronic arterial occlusions with great calcium component are usually a factor of limitation to endovascular treatment to the difficulty to transpose these lesions with guidewires and catheters commonly used.

Perspectives

Development in the bioengineering area assisted in the last decade, however, the area of the endovascular surgery and minimally invasive techniques followed their development as to minimize its limitations. Regarding the treatment of chronic obstructive lesions axis aortoiliac and iliac-femoral, there is still what is going in the treatment of obstructive atherosclerotic disease. This case exemplifies well as technological advances and the development of new materials can help significantly with satisfactory efficiency and safety in the treatment of patients whose endovascular technique is presented as the best surgical treatment option.
