What is it about?

Despite being made of valuable materials, the enormous polyester mooring ropes of retired offshore oil-producing ships are frequently disposed of as waste. This study investigates the possibility of recycling these ropes and combining them with common plastics to produce durable new materials. These ropes can yield long-lasting, superior products by experimenting with various mixtures and processing techniques.

Why is it important?

Giving offshore waste a second chance rather than disposing of it in landfills contributes to international efforts to reduce waste and advance a circular economy.

Perspectives

The mountains of discarded nylon and plastic polluting our land, air, and waterways don’t have to remain a menace. Waste can be transformed into useful materials locked safely inside concrete or turned into new products like floor mats, upholstery, cushions, and other everyday household and industrial items. Instead of harming the environment, this waste can become a valuable resource.
