What is it about?

This article shows how soil mineralogy (clay and sand fractions) vary in eight soils derived from contrasting parent materials under tropical humid climate in Brazil.

Why is it important?

Although in Portuguese, this work shows X-ray diffraction and geochemical data that show clearly that different mineral suites (kaolinitic with 2:1 clays; kaolinitic; gibbsitic and hematitic) actually depend on the type of rock. Thus, mineralogy of tropical soils is not as simple as previously imagined.

Federal University of Lavras

This work could only be performed because the region around Lavras comprises 30 different rocks along a 13-km radius, under the same climate and forest vegetation, an unique sampling situation.
