What is it about?

The advantage of using tissue-specific decellularized pancreas tissue (DP) scaffold when creating bioengineered constructs of the pancreas over biopolymer-based collagen-containing hydrogel (BCH) scaffolds was identified. BCH and tissue-specific DP scaffolds contribute not only to preserving the viability of isolated Langerhans islets, but also to prolonging their secretory capacity for 10 days, compared with ILs monoculture.

Why is it important?

The creation of a biomedical cell product – a bioengineered construct of the pancreas – is hampered by problems associated with maintaining the viability of isolated Langerhans islets .

Perspectives

The final aim is the creation of a bioengineered construct of the human pancreas
