What is it about?

The subject is socially relevant ECE curriculum and the messages relate to teaching courageously, making connections and social justice. The letter is the final chapter of my doctoral thesis about how fairness and diversity were being negotiated in an Aotearoa New Zealand kindergarten.

Why is it important?

Teaching is a complex, sometimes risky, political act. This 'Open letter' reminds teachers of their ethical responsibilities to respond to children's interests - not just the surface issues (easily visible like volcanoes) but their deeper interests (that are harder to see like the sea-bed). It also reiterates that parents know their children best and genuine partnerships and sharing of even 'the hard stuff' are likely to result in deeper understandings
