This paper uses a social media sample (Twitter) to examine the long-studied and controversial issue concerning the use of "tenir que" as an alternative to "haver de" as an obligation periphrasis in Catalan. It did show that, in this particular sample, that "tenir que" was more common in tweets originating from the Valencia area than in Catalonia. The study provides a glimpse into how Castilian/Catalan contact varies by region.
