What is it about?

This article examines two distinct modes of O'odham photography of O'odham pilgrimages to Magdalena. One photographer documented her own journey for her own religious purposes. The other photographer documented the pilgrimage as an outsider looking in for the purpose of historic preservation. Rather than arguing that one is better than the other, my coauthor - Lillia McEnaney - and I show how their modes of photography are distinct and how their different modes produce different effects in their own photographs.

Why is it important?

This article is important because it features O'odham photography of O'odham pilgrimages to Magdalena and interviews with O'odham photographers. The article also highlights two of the many ways in which O'odham envision O'odham pilgrimages to Magdalena.
