What is it about?

The life and writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer have been a great inspiration to many Christians. His works could also be a resource for dialogue between traditional Western Protestant churches and the growing global Pentecostal and Charismatic movement. Walter Hollenweger’s many uses of Bonhoeffer in reflections on the social impact of Pentecostalism provide a starting point to define five essential qualities of Pentecostalism.

Why is it important?

Protestant and Pentecostal churches have much to learn from one another. It is to the detriment of human development that the dialogue between these two traditions has largely been neglected. Hollenweger’s work shows that Bonhoeffer’s theology would be a great place to begin a both critical and sympathetic discussion. A closer look at Bonhoeffer’s works might reveal even more than we find in Hollenweger.

Perspectives

This article is the culmination of some of the earliest work I did as a graduate student, which whetted my appetite for following in Hollenweger's footsteps and engage in an in-depth historical study of the Pentecostal movement.
