Why is it important?

This article was specifically written as a 'primer' for those studying film music or for anyone with an interest in the history of film music. It pulls together a wide range of scholarly and other relevant sources, providing a comprehensive springboard of information for those exploring topics relating to film music and symphonic scoring in particular. It provides a useful bird's-eye view of the factors impacting the changing fortunes of symphonic film scores in Hollywood.

Perspectives

This article was written to address the problem of limited engagement with recommended reading and independent research in one of my modules. Encountering yet another batch of assignments lacking relevant or accurate historical/ contextual information, I decided to write a 'one-stop-shop' primer that would be set as required reading for the module and would draw together a wide range of scholarly sources - essentially doing the leg-work for the students. This explains the amount of notes provided and the inclusion of a large number of secondary sources. I hope you find it useful - as that was my primary purpose in putting pen to paper, or rather, keyboard to computer!
