Why is it important?

The influence of science fiction has grown in contemporary culture, and thus careful and analytical approaches to pop culture and science fiction help us better appreciate human motivations and social relationships.

Perspectives

Science fiction books are, for many people, religious canon. They provide inspiration, offer prophetic accounts of modern life and the future, help structure readers' worldviews, and more. To think of religious life today requires a broader outlook than the traditional texts and practices--pop culture has been put to the service of religious life, which is what I try to show in this essay about science fiction in general and China Mieville's _Perdido Street Station_, in particular
