I describe how transhumanism grew and changed through the 20th century, exploring the contributions made through pop science books and articles and science fiction (especially literature).

Why is it important?

Transhumanism has become a major component of contemporary culture, from scientific discoveries to pop culture (e.g. movies like Her and Ex Machina). While transhumanism is largely implicit in human behavior, it is nearly universal to humankind. Understanding it, therefore, is crucial to understanding the human development and appropriation of technology.
