What is it about?
The article looks at language learning outside school to see if there is a link between gaming (English language digital games) and learning English. The article shows that especially for boys there seems to be a connection between playing digital English games and learning English (vocabulary).

Why is it important?
Very little is known about very young children and how their engagement in English language activities outside school may influence how much English they learn. There are some important pedagogical implications of the finding; namely that educators in early English language teaching need to be aware of the skills and knowledge their students bring to the early language classroom, i.e. most students do not enter the classroom as blank slates.
Perspectives
The findings call for more research on the topic to get a more detailed knowledge on how young children engage with English-language digital media outside school.
