Polyurethane foams modified with nano-clay particles

What is it about?

There is a constant effort to improve properties of polyurethane (PU) foams. Clay nano-fillers offered significant improvements is some thermoplastic but relatively little research was done to understand the effect of nano-particles on foams. Generally addition of fillers at higher concentrations alter processing parameter, cell structure of foams but this effect depends on the shape of particles. Plate-like fillers like clays may have stronger effects at very low concentration but tend tend to disrupt the structure of cells.

It was shown that clay nano-particles have generally negative effect on the foaming process and thus properties but Tg was increased.
