What is it about?

When individual tubes in a carbon nanotube "turf" are coated with metal the resulting foam is very elastic; the CNT provides a foam scaffold, while the metal can be used to provide other properties not possible with only carbon.

Why is it important?

Nanofoams have excellent possibilities for being in technologies such as catalysis and forming electrical connections for flexible electronics, and metallizing them provides options not possible with only carbon.

Perspectives

This was a great opportunity to work with an outstanding undergraduate researcher (Kassi, now a PhD student at Boise State) and graduate student (Mohamad, now a professor at Phonecia University in Lebanon) while staring a collaboration with a former student (Max, who had already become a professor at U. Puerto Rico).
