What is it about?

Example of a program, Research Experiences Exploration in Materials Science (REEMS), that leverages university, business and professional organization partnerships to establish an academic track materials science program to introduce community college students to materials science and materials engineering. The program integrates academic year seminars, laboratory tours, university transfer guidance, networking and summer research experiences.

The REEMS program provides an opportunity for community college students to explore interdisciplinary academic areas and broaden their horizons relating to careers and graduate education.

Perspectives

This article provided an overview of the REEMS program that has generated considerable community college student impact regarding academic and career choices, guidance toward achieving those goals, and the opportunity for students from a wide range of economic backgrounds, academic and career interests to participate in significant learning activities and summer research experiences. I welcome the opportunity to share program insights, challenges, and impacts.
