What is it about?

In the recent years there was an increase in the number of people seeking treatment because of problematic pornography use. We investigated the underlying reasons for seeeking such form of treatment among of women. We show that women may seek such treatment not only because it has a negative impact on their life (as it is to a large degree - for males), but also because of sheer frequency of pornography use, personal beliefs and social norms.

Why is it important?

According to our knowledge it is the first study on woman actually seeking treatment for problematic pornogrtaphy use. Our findings show that women can seek treatment for problematic pornography use for different reason than men. When deciding to seek treatmen, social/religious norms seem to have a greater impact in the case of women. We believe that those important factors should be taken in account in therapeutic work with women.

Perspectives

Writing this article was very rewarding for us. As prelevance of problematic pornography use is decidedly higher for males than for females, collecting sufficent sample of women seeking treatment for problematic pornography use took a very long time. Because of this reason, completing this process was even more satisfying. We hope that our work will contribute to increasing the research interest in problematic pornography use among women.
