What is it about?
Fructans are recently getting high attention in the health food sector as well as scientific media due to their direct effect on gut health both positive and negative and indirect effect as trigger for gluten intolerance. To see how breeding in Australia has had affected the wheat frunctan contents, we have screened a set of 78 old and modern Australian wheat varieties released over the last 150 years, for their their fructan content. In our study, varieties both with high and low fructan contents have been identified, which can be potential breeding target for developing new varieties.

This is very first study about screening the old and modern Australian wheat varieties for their fructan contents and it has included large set of varieties covering maximum time span in Australian wheat breeding history. This work is particularly very useful for breeder's, with an opportunity to develop new varieties with high or low fructan contents.
