What is it about?

The study examines expression of known protease inhibitors (PI) in drought stressed wheat varieties with different tolerance towards water deprivation. We found considerable increase of Bowman—Birk type PI WALI3 (BBPI) transcripts in drought stressed leaves suggesting an important regulatory role of BBPI in adjustment of leaf protein metabolism under dehydration.

Why is it important?

Understanding the regulation of proteolysis in winter wheat subjected to unfavorable environmental factors provides valuable information which will serve in molecular-based strategies for selection and development of tolerant varieties.
