What is it about?

Women may experience severe vaginal bleeding after miscarriage, abortion, or childbirth. In some cases, the bleeding is caused by abnormal blood vessels inside the uterus. These conditions are uncommon but can become life-threatening if not diagnosed correctly. This study evaluated 20 women with abnormal uterine blood vessel patterns detected using transvaginal color Doppler ultrasound. Several rare conditions were identified, including enhanced myometrial vascularity, uterine artery pseudoaneurysm, uterine arteriovenous malformation, venous varix, placental implantation site subinvolution, retained placental polyp, and invasive molar disease. The study showed that Doppler ultrasound can help distinguish between these different abnormalities by analyzing blood flow patterns and vessel appearance. Correct diagnosis is important because each condition requires different treatment approaches, ranging from conservative follow-up to vascular intervention or surgery. These findings support the important role of Doppler ultrasound in improving diagnosis and helping physicians manage severe post-pregnancy bleeding safely and effectively.

Why is it important?

Severe bleeding after pregnancy complications can be life-threatening. Many uterine vascular abnormalities appear similar on routine ultrasound. Doppler ultrasound helps differentiate these rare conditions accurately. Correct diagnosis can prevent unnecessary procedures and improve fertility-preserving treatment.

Perspectives

Future studies with larger patient groups may help establish standardized ultrasound criteria for differentiating uterine vascular abnormalities. Advanced Doppler techniques and artificial intelligence-assisted imaging analysis could further improve diagnostic accuracy and help guide individualized treatment decisions while preserving fertility whenever possible.
