What is it about?
The TV show Years and Years (2019) explores how Brexit affects immigrants and refugees, making their lives harder. The BBC TV show highlights how fear, pain, and hope configure people's actions. I also examine different forms of nostalgia—how some people desire to return to imperialist past (imperial nostalgia) and how personal loss can turn into resentment (familial nostalgia). By analyzing the emotions in the TV show, I explain how Brexit creates division and fear while reinforcing outdated ideas about national identity.

Why is it important?
I connect Brexit’s political and social impact with an affective framework—a perspective often overlooked in migration studies. Analyzing Years and Years (2019), I highlight how Brexit policies are not only political decisions but also foreground emotional experiences that shape identity and relationships. This article may contribute to ongoing research in media studies, postcolonial studies, and migration research.
Perspectives
I hope this research help academics and people understand how emotions shape migration narratives and identities in political events like post-Brexit Britain. I consider audiovisual narratives such as Years and Years (2019) can challenge forms of oppression, foster empathy and imagine inclusive futures.
