What is it about?
This is a commentary about the likely effects of Gold OA that was written just as PLoS was launching its first journal, PLoS Biology. It holds up pretty well, actually.
Why is it important?
I postulated back in 2004 that PLoS's Gold OA business model would eventually lead to accepting more and more papers. Which it did. What I did not anticipate is just how many papers they would accept! PLoS One is by far the largest journal in the world. Talk about an incentive to publish more.
