Why is it important?
Breastfeeding is an important determinant for lifelong health. Increasing the effectiveness of lactation support for women outside of the hospital setting will help promote breastfeeding success and longevity.
Perspectives
Where will mothers go when breastfeeding hits snags? Who can they consult with when questions arise? Typical healthcare providers such as primary care doctors, OB providers, and pediatricians are usually neither sufficiently informed nor experienced in lactation issues. Having lactation consultants readily available in the community is a necessity for these mothers and their babies.
