What is it about?

Written in the style of an academic essay, this article contributes to the field of tourism, development and anthropology by identifying two main tourism development strategies used to cope with globalisation and modernisation, and it presents an analytical model through which to frame them.

Why is it important?

It makes a clear-cut distintion between two types of tourism development strategies. Those that mainly aim to fulfill tourists shifting expectations, needs and desires and hence look towards the outside; and those that looking toward the inside, attend to maintain the cultural production of meanings.

I hope that this article may help people to understand that approaching tourism development from a socio-anthropological perspective might be revealing.
