What is it about?

During assisted reproduction for in vitro fertilization eggs and there surrounding cumulus granulosa cells are isolated. Cumulus cells are usually discarded while the oocytes that look mature are fertilized. The cumulus cells could provide information about egg quality and potential embryo quality. This review article summarizes work on cumulus cell RNA profiles to provide evidence of useful biomarkers for oocyte selection.

Why is it important?

In IVF procedures, many retrieved mature eggs look alike even when the majority will not give rise to a viable pregnancy. Having a non-invasive method (one that doesn't effect the egg or embryo) to determine which eggs are high quality will maximize pregnancy success. Analyzing cumulus cell biomarkers and relating it to oocyte quality is a non-invasive approach.

Perspectives

This approach could lead to a method of selecting the best eggs to fertilize for pregnancy even before they are fertilized.
