What is it about?
Hormones, oxygen and many other factors change dramatically near the time of birth. The growth and maturation of the heart also changes near the time of birth. We describe how these changes in specific factors might be important for controlling growth of the heart.

Why is it important?
Most babies are lucky enough to have come from healthy pregnancies. But some babies experience placental insufficiency and intrauterine growth restriction, or are born prematurely, or experience endocrine disorders, or congenital heart disease. These conditions can profoundly affect their heart for life. By understand how factors that control growth of the heart change near the time of birth, we can better help infants that faced challenging conditions in the womb or at birth.
