What is it about?

This is one of the largest association studies published to date and included data from three independent case-control studies in there different continents. The study is important because it convincingly showed that a genetic variant on chromosome 8q24, a know susceptibility region for several cancer types, is associated with 16% increase risk of thyroid cancer

Why is it important?

This study is important as it validated a new genetic risk factor for thyroid cancer. In conjunction with other known genetic variants, the polymorphism evaluated in the study can be used for genetic risk assessment and stratification for thyroid cancer prevention and early detection

Perspectives

This study is important as it helped settle the controversy on the role of the 8q24 variant on thyroid cancer risk. Using a large new dataset and meta-analyses of published data, we provided a convincing proof that rs6983267G is a bona fide thyroid cancer risk variant
