Why is it important?

Prolonged clinical remission of type 1 diabetes with sitagliptin and vitamin D3 showed be cheap and safe, and maybe can be use for new-onset type 1 diabetes in teenager and adults.

Perspectives

I believe the association between sitagliptin and vitamin D3 could have benefits as an immunomodulatory drug in type 1 diabetes mellitus, because they act synergistically over the immune system, adding regulatory effect on Treg cells and Th17 cells, normalizing the imbalance between these cells. Furthermore, the incretin effects of the sitagliptin, which increases the GLP-1 levels, could protect the beta cells. Sitagliptin and vitamin D3 could also regulate a wide variety of inflammatory cytokynes.
