Hormone deprivation alters mitochondrial function and lipid profile in the hippocampus

What is it about?

Mitochondria are crucial for cellular bioenergetics and survival and their dysfunction plays a central role in aging. Our results indicate that lack of ovarian hormones induces functional changes and alters the lipid milieu in hippocampal mitochondria comparable to an aging phenotype.

Our study may contribute to gain better knowledge of the increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other age-associated disorders observed in women after ovarian hormone natural or surgical loss.
